Chapter Fourteen

CASSIE

Of all the rotten, shitty luck, mine is the rottenest, shittiest luck.

“Lucasta?” The man who spoke stepped closer. “It is you.”

My body stiffened, as I fought to remain where I stood. I recognized him instantly. The golden mask could hide the misshapen nose and the low brow. It couldn’t hide the cruel smirk, or the giant, ham-fists that I knew so well.

Navien.

Navien had been one of my key tormentors. A full-fledged dragon born to privilege, powerful beyond belief, and Zerrich’s attack dog. He and his cronies had spent a lot of time making my life a living hell. A lot of time. And effort. Just the sight of him made my stomach roil.

But I would not run.

Not any more.

“I beg your pardon,” I said, my tone haughty as I slipped the mask back on. “You have me confused with someone else.”

“Nah, Lucasta,” Navien said, stepping closer. I resisted the urge to press myself into the stone behind me. “I’d know you anywhere.”

Alain raised his arm, blocking Navien’s path. “I’m afraid the lady is correct,” he drawled. “You are mistaken.”

Navien eyed Alain up and down. Alain stared back, cool and collected. Navien grinned, and his eyes flashed with fire. “Who the fuck are you?”

“You’re talking to my lady,” Alain said, his tone bored. “Time to move on, friend.”

“I’m not your friend.”

“I’m beginning to suspect that.”

“Don’t, Alain. It’s not worth it.” I pleaded. “He’ll wipe the floor with you.”

“He can try.”

“He won’t get the chance to try.” Will stepped out of the darkness, his face encased in gold like the rest of us. He turned to Navien. “Are you bothering my woman?”

Navien’s heavy brow furrowed as he looked between Alain and Will. He jerked a thumb at the incubus. “You should talk with this guy here. He says the bitch is his.”

Will's mouth twitched. When he spoke, his voice was low. Dangerous. “You’re addressing a woman under my protection.”

Navien never had any sense. He ignored Will's tone and turned to me. “What, Lucasta? You fucking both of them? How did you snag two when you couldn’t even handle one? Or maybe these two don’t equal half the man that Zerrich is?”

I flinched. I couldn’t help it. Zerrich’s name had been striped across my life in vicious lashes, with every cruelty marked on my skin, my body, and even my soul.

My reaction didn’t escape any of the men. Navien grinned, pleased with my discomfort. Alain stepped to the right of me, and wrapped his arm around my waist possessively, placing himself at an angle in front of me. My eyes stung.

“Can I school this asshole?” Alain asked.

“Go for it,” I replied.

Alain pressed his mouth to my neck, and a wave of incubus magic spread from his lips to my skin. No, not incubus magic. Just Alain, and the heat between us. The surge of desire swept over my body, I arched my back, and moaned, my lids fluttering as my eyes closed.

Apparently, my reaction to Zerrich’s name didn’t escape Will either, because he pushed his way past Navien, cupped my face in his broad hands, and locked his lips onto mine.
